WELCOME TO THE PARISH OF VERYAN

Cornwall

Last updated: 3rd July 2008

Nare Head viewed from Carne BeachThe parish of Veryan is situated on the beautiful Roseland peninsula and extends along the south Cornish coast from Pendower beach in the west to Portholland in the east. Inland it reaches to Reskivers adjoining the parish of Tregony. The main settlements are at Veryan Churchtown, Veryan Green, Portloe and the smaller hamlets of Trewartha, Treviskey, Carne and Camels.

The earliest settlers who left traces were tribes from the Bronze Age and Carne Beacon, not far from Carne beach, is one of the largest burial mounds or ‘barrows’ in Britain. Later came the Iron Age Celts who in turn left their traces in the ‘ringarounds’, the barely discernable remains of their circular forts. In more peaceful times the main occupations within the parish have been farming and fishing – and a little smuggling, for the authorities had to set up a Revenue team in the fishing village of Portloe to try and deter the illicit trade.

The famous Round Houses of Veryan VillageThe present day parish is home to some 900 souls and, despite the mobility of modern people, it retains its strong Cornish traditions. Although totally rural and off the beaten track, it takes only twenty minutes by car to reach the towns of Truro and St Austell. Being almost as far south as one can be in the British Isles, the climate is mild, spring comes early and it is a gardener’s paradise. The parish has a thriving junior school, two excellent hotels, several shops and galleries, a number of comfortable and welcoming B & Bs and two public houses. A good third of the parish boundary is sea, a happy mixture of safe sandy beaches and cliffs, dominated by the imposing Nare Head.Map of the Parish - click to see large version

About This Site

This site offers up-to-date information and local news to residents and visitors to this lovely Cornish parish, and is, in some ways,  the electronic counterpart of Veryan’s parish magazine. It is a free resource for residents, community groups and local businesses. It is run on a not-for-profit basis, by unpaid volunteers. Any future earnings will be ploughed back into local charitable causes, for example the Church Structural Fund.

If you want to promote a project or activity to our community, we’ll be happy to host details on this site, for the moment free of charge.  Local businesses can advertise here.  From mid-2008, this service will continue to be free for those advertising in the Parish Magazine, a modest fee of £5 per year will apply to others.
