100 Club

Our lovely old church costs some £70 a day to run but on top of that all maintenance and repairs has also to be funded.   It has become clear that the windows, dating form the 1847 restoration, are now on their last legs and will have to be replaced as soon as possible.

One of the less painful methods of raising the very considerable sums required - there are 18 windows - is to set up a 100 Club.

This was launched at the Christmas Fair;  the individual commitment is for one year at £5 per month by direct debit or £55 per year if paid in advance.   The minimum payout will be £200 per month on a full up-take, proportionally less on a lesser up-take.

The 100 Cub winner in March was Mrs Elizabeth Wright.

There are still tickets available - we should be able to manage to take up a mere 100 tickets!

Meditation

This month's meditation meeting will take place at Polcuta Cottage, Veryan Green, at 2.30pm on Thursday 17th July.   Newcomers to this friendly meeting are welcome.

Summer Fete

Do come and enjoy yourselves at the annual church fete - alias the Family Fun Day.   It takes place in the parish hall, the school and the gardens opposite.   There will be a live Punch and Judy (a rarity these days)  a fancy dress competition, cream teas, competitions, stalls and music.

Help would be very much appreciated towards items for the bric-a-brac stall(501282), books (501650), plants (501704) and cakes 9501125)for their respective stalls, raffle prizes and bottles for the bottle stall, always a popular stopping point.  Offers of scones and cakes for the teas would be gratefully received.

Mark the date in your diary now and come along to the centre of the village and enjoy a good time for a good cause.

Veryan Players

Veryan Players will be presenting a Caramba’s Revenge, a ‘black comedy’ by William Norfolk, for the summer production in Portscatho.  This year we are fielding yet more new members on stage, and have a new timetable.  We will be performing on the LAST TWO THURSDAYS in July (24th & 31st) and only on the FIRST TWO THURSDAYS in August (7th & 14th)t, which will give our members a bit of freedom during late summer for the first time in many years.

Rehearsals began a couple of weeks ago, and as usual we are looking out for a prop.  Does anyone have a bird cage we could borrow?  We found one for a play a we did a couple of years back and sadly (through no fault of ours, we hasten to add) it gave up the ghost and had to be consigned to the dustbin – well, it was very, very old.  Any offer of help gratefully received.

We do not want to give too much of the story away, but it revolves around three elderly ladies and their attempts to eke out their pensions in more ways than one!  Throw in a long lost relative, a slightly ‘bent’ copper, a ‘friend’ with an eye to the chance of improving her lot and anything can, and does happen.  We are having fun, and we hope our audiences will too.

 Were we not lucky

when the large tree next to the church lych-gate was blown down a short time ago.   It dislodged a couple of tiles on the gate and missed the church notice board by a couple of feet.   It also brought down the main power lines and cut the electricity supply to a number of houses for some hours.

However, the remains of the tree were quickly sawn up and order was restored.   One benefit is that the view of the church from the road is now immeasurably improved...

Veryan Open Gardens

Some £3028 was raised after expenses on the Open Gardens weekend - a splendid result, justifying the enormous amount of work put into preparing the gardens.   So, too, was the work of the many helpers at the parish hall, where the cakes, cream teas etc were dribblingly good.  Did you see the full colour page spread in the West Briton - good events make good news!

This is an exceedingly good result and a real tonic for our church finances which increase, like everything else in this expensive country of ours, and make it increasingly difficult to maintain our lovely old church.
